This Must Be a Joke...Andre-Pierre Gignac to Barcelona?!

I am hoping that this is a joke because...it has to be. You all know Gignac, or rather: Andre-Pierre Overweight Gigsnack. A man who is an insult to every hard working striker who gets in the gym each day to look lean, fit and trim. This is the same man who Enrique allegedly has his sights set on as a fourth striker.

To humor this and even Enrique, there are several reasons why this is a bad move. Even if he is only to be used as a backup in case either of the front three get injured, I don't see how it works. Let's actually start first off with where our dear friend plies his trade.

Mexico.

When it comes to culture, hot food, women, interactions; Mexico is great. If we want to talk about competitiveness of a domestic league in comparison to the major ones, then Mexico falls behind. This is where Gignac is playing, so for Barcelona to even be looking at the Mexican league is laughable in itself. Let's say though, this was an unknown player that was a youngster who scouts said could be a major star, then that's different. So many stars have been found from lesser known leagues due to great scouting.

But this is Gignac. He's had his time, mostly spent in France, and there's a reason why he never made it after so many years in the game. The man was never good enough to warrant any of the big clubs even putting his name on their longlist. As a striker, he's okay, decent, passable but he's not even in the second tier of strikers in the world. So now you're getting the picture. Luis Enrique is going for a third tier striker.

There's also the "Fit-Issue". Remember when Ibrahimovic was involved in that swap deal with Eto'o? I found it odd and couldn't believe Guardiola wanted to do away with Samuel. I just didn't see Ibrahimovic fitting into the tiki-take system that Guardiola used at Barcelona.

In the end, Inter Milan were the ones who won out winning the treble whilst Ibra just never made the desired impact. But it's Ibra, his talent still allowed him to score a lot of goals that season. Gignac is not in the same milky-way as Ibrahimovic and is a horrible fit.

Barcelona are a team that like to move the ball around, with everyone getting lots of touches. The kind of striker that fits with them is someone who is light on their feet, can dribble and knows how to navigate the one-twos in tight spaces, with great movement being extremely important. I'm sorry, but Gignac is not that kind of player. He's more of a throwback 4-4-2 kind of striker that's a shoot-on sight weapon.

Maybe on the off chance it can work because Gignac is so different that in a game where Barcelona are finding it difficult to create chances, he can come on and blossom like a butterfly, and rescue them. I just doubt it. There's a reason why he's playing his football in Mexico and not for any of the major clubs. HH
