This might seem strange. Why would the current Champions League winners, richest club in the world want with who is now a Division 1 player, employed by Newcastle?
Sissoko would not strike anyone as someone Real Madrid would even think of. He really is not in the same footballing class as Kroos or Modric, so what would Zidane want with him when there are several other players that he could get, much better than him?
It's called being a smart manager who looks at the long-term not the short.
Zidane knows what he's doing here. He's not buying someone to replace Modric and Kroos, he is seeing what Sissoko did at the Euros, and is building a squad. The Champions League has already been won, and now it's time for the league. In order to win a league, it's not just about a great first team but having a great squad.
Moussa gives Zidane that intensity, stamina and legs in the midfield to give it more weight. Kroos and Modric are more finesse players, but they cannot cover the pitch up and down consistently over ninety minutes in the way Sissoko did in that Euro final. Especially in a match where players are getting tired, Sissoko is a great player to bring on.
Madrid don't currently have a box-to-box player. There are Kroos and Modric who are more natural central midfielders, then you have Casemiro who is a the stoic defensive-midfield role. Nobody else in Madrid has the ability to cover the whole pitch as well as Sissoko does, and that's a very useful player to have. If I was making a squad, knowing how important the midfield is, I would ensure that I had one of these kinds of players in it.
It's a good move. Both Zizou and Sissoko are French, and I can see Sissoko giving Madrid something different which is what every manager needs. You've got to have variation and be able to switch up your styles to keep yourself winning every week. Kroos and Modric may have a bad game or come up against a team where they get shut down. That's when Zidane can look at his bench and bring on Sissoko who is a completely different player from those two.
