Andre Gomes is a Good Signing for Barcelona, But Not The One They NEED
Andre Gomes, fresh off winning the European Cup with Portugal and one of the bright sparks of the tournament has now been given his just rewards. Being picked up by the La Liga giants and having the rare opportunity to mix it up with Lionel Richie himself...the Argentine one not the American.
It's a good signing but it's not exactly the one that I think Barcelona should be jumping up and down about with glee. Does this greatly improve their attack? No. Does this make them better? Yes. Andre Gomes is a good player with a nice footballing brain which will always make your team better offensively. But does this now solve what lead to Barcelona's downfall against Atletico last season which was their defensive frailty? Not even close.
This is a good fit. Andres Gomes plays like Iniesta without quite being as good as him. All that matters is he will slot in very nicely and quickly in the Barcelona way of moving the ball around. I'd be happy to even bet money (I wouldn't, I don't have any) that he will be a much better success than Arda Turan, who was a total no-show.
PS If I was Diego Simeone, out of spite, I wouldn't even take him back.
All I am saying is, you need to give me a central defender or even a tough as nails DM, who offers more protection at the back and prevents the kind of soft goals that they let in last season. Umtiti is a good start, but he's young and didn't play enough at the Euros to show he can be the new Puyol for Pique to form a solid parnership with.
Barcelona's problem is not scoring goals or even creating them. Although, there were matches where it was all too static and theres was a lack of imagination in forging up a chance. So perhaps Andre Gomes can come in to bring in fresh ideas alongside Iniesta.
I'm happy for Gomes though. He didn't really play as well towards the end of the Euros, but he showed enough talent that he's a very naturally gifted footballer who has no problem having lots of the ball and continually probing to find the pass to open up the opposition. A perfect player for Barcelona's...attacking side. HH
